Organized by the HUN-REN Wigner Research Centre for Physics, the "1st Training School on Testing Fundamental Physics with Seismology – FuSe School 2026" was held in Tihany, Hungary, from 7th to 11th September 2026. The school was the first training event of the COST Action "Testing Fundamental Physics with Seismology – FuSe" (CA24101), hosted by the HUN-REN Balaton Limnological Research Institute. The international event brought together more than 50 participants from more than 15 countries.

The connection between seismology and fundamental physics has produced increasingly exciting research results in recent years: it has emerged that seismic and geophysical data can reveal not only a great deal about the Earth's internal structure, but may also be used to probe gravitational theories, particle physics models, and even the internal structure of astrophysical objects. Such interdisciplinary approaches can open new avenues for testing the fundamental laws of nature through planetary-scale observations.
FuSe School 2026 focused on this new, emerging interdisciplinary field, which spans fundamental physics research, Earth sciences, as well as astrophysics and cosmology. Leading international experts in these fields were invited to Tihany for a week to share their knowledge with young researchers and innovators. The aim of the training was for participants to learn how seismic data can help identify possible traces of unknown physics, while also deepening our understanding of how the Earth itself works. The programme also covered the application of big data analysis, machine learning and artificial intelligence in seismology, seismics and physics, and presented domestic applied research in order to help translate theoretical results into practice.
The school's invited trainers included Tomasz Bulik (Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw, Poland), Andrea Donini (University of Valencia, Spain), Piotr Homola (H. Niewodniczański Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków), Petre Lameski (University of Skopje, North Macedonia), Philippe Lognonné (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, Université Paris Cité, France), Livia Ludhova (GSI Darmstadt and Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany), and our institute's own Gergely Surányi (HUN-REN Wigner Research Centre for Physics).

The event was prepared by a local organizing committee of HUN-REN Wigner Research Centre for Physics staff, led by Gergely Gábor Barnaföldi, with Ildikó Fazekas, Gábor Bíró, Anna Horváth, Edit Fenyvesi, Péter Ván and Máté Pszota. Scientific organization was carried out by the FuSe Core Group, led by Aneta Wojnar.
In connection with the event, Péter Ván gave a public outreach lecture at the Fazekas Mihály High School in Budapest, organized by Anikó Schramek, which was attended in person by more than 50 students, with a further 50 following online.
The first FuSe School 2026 provided a strong starting point for the further training events planned under the FuSe CA24101 COST Action, and laid a solid foundation for strengthening the link between seismic research and the search for new physics.
